Healthcare Porter Sarah Mackenzie-Russell shares strong message for women on International Women’s Day 2021

On International Women’s Day 2021, Sarah Mackenzie Russell shared some thoughtful insights about her role and working as a woman in a largely male team.

Sarah is one of only two women working as a Healthcare Porter, a traditionally male-dominated role, at Harrogate Integrated Facilities. The role involves a wide variety of tasks and is physically demanding as the porters are responsible for delivering bloods, equipment and patients around the hospital site.

Both male and female porters will transfer male and female patients; it is not necessary to be the same sex as the patient who needs transferring.

Despite being aware that she is one of only two women in the team, however, she said “they’re a great team” and said that they always have a good laugh, enjoy each other’s company and get on really well as a team.

Sarah said, “A message that I’d give to any women out there who want to pursue a traditional male role is go for it! You can achieve it. If you want it that badly you can achieve it. So good luck!”
